A Dog Breastfeeds An Abandoned Baby

A dog breastfeeds an abandoned baby

This is a story that, in addition to a sense of pride, also produces a certain shame, but it is still worth talking about: a dog nursed a newborn in deplorable living conditions, and it is to her that we owe in part survival.

It is not uncommon to hear cases of animals helping people, and in particular this time, a little in the style of Romulus and Remus, it was a dog who saved one of the most defenseless creatures, a baby.

A gruesome discovery

On the morning of September 2 this year, the Chilean authorities received an alarming call. It was a woman who claimed to see an abandoned baby in the parking lot of a mechanical workshop, concerned for the safety of the child.

The events took place in a residence near the city of Arica, located in northern Chile, where the police found a two-year-old baby, barefoot, half-naked, dirty and with obvious signs of neglect.

The fact that caused greater indignation, however, is that at the time of the arrival of the police, the mother of the creature was inside the residence in an evident state of intoxication, while the child was guarded by a dog called Reina, who was among other things breastfeeding.

Apparently the child’s mother is a victim of alcoholism, which is why the child was totally abandoned to his fate. Fortunately, the little one did not show serious signs of malnutrition, although some parasites common in dogs were found on his little body, which suggests that this was not the first time that the dog took care of him.

According to reports from the neighbors of the workshop, the mother had moved alone with the child, and they had lived in the place for about a month.

The baby was rushed to the hospital, where it was found that there were no signs of malnutrition, but only serious signs of abandonment. The police managed to get in touch with the baby’s father and the man, who works in another city, proved his intentions to keep the baby.

The mother will be reported for abandonment and will not only have to deal with the withdrawal of custody of the minor, but will have to serve a sentence that could include up to five years in prison.

Reina’s heroism

Despite all the drama of this story, which perfectly reflects what humans are sometimes capable of, the episode also serves to highlight how much we still have to learn from animals.

According to what was stated by the police, due to the continuous omission of attention on the part of the mother, and due to the lack of means for proper feeding of the little one, it is presumable that the child would have died had it not been for the presence of the dog. Reina, who nursed him.

The most curious thing about the whole affair is that the animal was not owned by the child’s mother, but by the neighbor from whom the complaint originated.

The woman had begun to notice strange behavior in the dog, which disappeared for hours from her home and returned in an evident state of exhaustion.

It was then that the woman made the decision to follow her to find out where she was hiding all that time, discovering in this way that the animal spent the mornings breastfeeding the baby.

Without detracting from Reina’s valiant act, it is well known that canine milk can cause damage to humans, as it contains parasites that can settle in the nervous system as well as contain a higher level of protein than maternal.

However, the baby survived thanks to the fact that the breastfeeding periods were relatively short, but sufficient to prevent the baby from dying from starvation.

Fortunately for the little one, a four-legged angel came to his aid, rescuing him and alleviating his hunger, which his birth mother had not been able to do.
