A Smart Collar To Know How Your Dog Feels

A smart collar to know how your dog is feeling

One of the questions that we dog owners always ask ourselves is “what does my dog feel every day and in particular situations?”. Thanks to a smart collar, we can now finally discover the feelings of our four-legged friends. Would you like to enter your dog’s mind?

Inupathy, the collar of feelings

This smart collar, created by a Japanese engineer, has been programmed to detect dogs’ feelings through a color code. The device, still under development, works as an algorithm capable of interpreting the dog’s heart rate. If you like the idea and would like to be able to buy one right away, you can contribute by making a donation on the specially created crowdfunding platform.

Until now, knowing the feelings of animals seemed an impossible undertaking. Although we are able to understand if our dog is sad or happy from his expression, there are many other emotions that cannot be identified only by sight.

Starting from this concept, Joji Yamaguchi has designed an intelligent collar that indicates the mood of animals. The invention, which takes its name from the combination of two words in English – Insight (knowledge) and Empathy (empathy) – is able to analyze the dog’s heart rate and then translate it into a color code.

If it turns red it is because the animal is nervous; blue indicates that the animal is relaxed; if white appears the animal is concentrated, while if the entire color scale appears… Congratulations! Your dog is happy.

The collar is connected to a smartphone application in which data relating to the animal’s emotions are collected on a daily basis. In this way it is possible to analyze how the animal feels and under what specific circumstances. But there is more: thanks to a percentage calculation it is possible to understand how nervous, concentrated, relaxed or happy he is. This is an absolutely fantastic device that will allow us to understand our animals and give them the attention or affection they need.

In order for Inuphaty to be launched on the market, it needs to receive funds. You can also help this cause by making a donation through the Indiegogo website. By paying $169 they will ship the collar home, you will collaborate in the research and you will save $80 (in the future the device will cost $249).

If Inupathy’s idea caught your attention, you will surely like this second creation as well. The device in question allows you to locate your pet and know its health status. It is “Buddy”, an LED collar that glows in the dark and has a built-in temperature sensor, activity display and sensor that reveals your dog’s location. To prevent the collar from getting damaged, it has been designed in totally waterproof material. The creators of the invention are part of a company called Squeaker which, just like the Japanese engineer, seeks financial support through the Kickstarter portal. The device connects via Blutooth to a mobile phone and is used with an application (compatible with Android and Apple).

If your pet moves away from the perimeter you have designated, the collar will immediately activate to alert you. Another possibility of the invention is to know the calorie consumption, the temperature and the duration of the physical activity that your dog carries out. For example, you can connect it to a smart thermostat and find out if your pet suffers too much from the heat in the summer or from the cold in the winter.

The cost of “Buddy” is $180 on the appropriate crowdfunding platform. The more complete models cost $240 and $300 (they also include physical activity sensors and GPS).

Do you believe that technology can help you and your pet? Are you interested in knowing the feelings of your life partner? Do you want to prevent it from straying too far from you? Are you looking for a system to help you monitor your dog day and night? With these smart collars it is now possible!
