Burmilla, A Faithful Cat Like A Dog

Burmilla, a faithful cat like a dog

The cat is an animal that, over the centuries, has often been crossed with the aim of forging new breeds capable of satisfying both aesthetic and functional particularities for the human being. Alongside the more common and popular small cats, there are others that are much less known, such as the Burmilla.

In this article we will talk about this formidable feline breed, introducing you to particularities and characteristics that many of you will surely appreciate.

The Burmilla cat, everything you need to know

Origin of the breed

The origin of this cat is to be found in the United Kingdom. The first examples of the breed were born from the union between a Burmese (or  Burmese ) cat and a Persian cat. It is therefore understandable where its name comes from. This crossing was finally successful in 1981, and you can see that it is a relatively recent breed. When the first cats from this union were born, the breeders were very satisfied and decided to promote the spread of the new breed to the maximum.

It was not in fact a simple cross between any two specimens. Father and mother of the first Burmilla were carefully selected in order to obtain the best possible result from the genetic point of view. The  International Feline Federation agreed to recognize and welcome this new feline family only thirteen years later, in 1994.

Characteristics of the Burmilla cat

We are talking about a medium-sized cat, muscular and with an elegant bearing. His back is straight and his chest has a rounded shape. It has thin and long legs, which paradoxically are able to release considerable strength.

The base of the tail is broad and tapering outwards, covered with many hairs and with a rounded tip. An interesting feature is a type of letter ‘m’ that appears to have drawn on its forehead. The head has a triangular shape, wider at the top and narrow at the bottom.

The eyes of the Burmilla cat are large and almond-shaped, with a black outline that stands out enormously against the green color of the iris. This will always be the color of his eyes, regardless of the shade of his fur.

As for the mantle, there are two types of length. The short-haired specimens  have a homogeneous and robust distribution, even if soft. Long-haired Burmillas have a kind of double coat that makes the animal more protected and aesthetically soft, especially under the chin and in the final part of the body and on the tail. The colors allowed to consider your specimen ‘purebred’ are: blue, black, chocolate, lilac, red or cream. The shade will always be very bright and on, you will want to caress it always.

Character and personality of the Burmilla

This cat stands out for being very playful and with a great ability to adapt to any environment, person or other pet. Burmillas are sociable and their happiness is based on being surrounded by people or animals and sharing every aspect of family life.

His personality is sweet, affectionate and meek. He will always be looking for your pampering and will always respond to your needs, ready to obey you. Cuddles, games, hugs and caresses will always be welcomed by this peaceful cat.

They are not aggressive at all, and if there is anything to highlight about them, it is their intelligence and their energy level. The Burmilla cat is different from the rest of the cats you know: they don’t spend twelve hours sleeping like the others, but they will always want to stay active, at all times. His developed mind prompts him to seek  constant communication  and mutual contact with members of what he considers his family.

Burmilla, some special care

On the plus side of Burmilla it should be noted that it  has a very powerful immune system. He does not suffer from congenital pathologies nor have any particular age-related disorders been recorded. It will only need a good diet with all the necessary nutrients and a few exercise sessions, if sterilized, to ward off obesity.

As for the hygiene of the coat, we advise you to brush it several times a week to remove dead hair and keep its soft coat always shiny and smooth. His ears are something you will need to check and clean often, to avoid possible infections such as otitis which is very common in cats.

The Burmilla cat, as we have seen, is a very special cat. Less independent than other breeds, they are sure to make an excellent companion animal. It has all the benefits of one cat and one dog at a time. What more can you ask for from a pet? Are you already thinking of him as your new flatmate?
