As we have seen and heard in the media, last year’s Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Bob Dylan. In addition to being a composer and human rights activist,  the mythical artist loves animals.

Bob Dylan: a surprising Nobel

The official announcement of last year’s Nobel Prize in Literature was made on October 13, 2016. So, then, the Swedish Academy announced that the juror had awarded this prize to the musician Bob Dylan, aged 75 and a true rock legend, for ” having created new poetic expressions within the great tradition of American song”.

His real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman. This artist was born on May 24, 1941. He began his musical career in 1959, when he performed in clubs in Minnesota, USA.  His best known songs are those of the 60s, such as “Blowin ‘in the Wind” and “The Times They are A-Changin”. Some have become anthems of the civil rights and anti-Vietnam war movement.

Music dedicated to animals

However, Bob Dylan is one of the most influential figures of recent years in the United States,  because he was a recognized activist and, like many, he also loves animals.

Among the works that are still preserved from when Bob Dylan was not yet famous is a poem he wrote when he was only 16 and was camping at Herzl Camp, in Wisconsin. The text entitled ‘The little buddy’ tells the sad story of a dog’s beating death.

This poem was signed with his real name, Bobby Zimmerman. This “dark and eerie” two-page poem written in blue ink sold at auction in New York for $12,500.

Shortly thereafter, the same auction house discovered that this poem and its lyrics were very similar to a song by Hank Snow, a Canadian country singer.

Part of the poem goes like this: Little friend rest in peace, God will watch over you over the years, because I told him in my dreams that you were mine.

Dylan and the cats

On several occasions,  Dylan has been photographed in the company of some cats. It is proof that he loves these animals too.

Even in 1990 his album number 27 entitled “Under the Sky” was released, which included the track “Cat’s In The Well”.  Apparently Dylan particularly liked this song. The last time he played it was on October 25, 2010.

The text of one of his songs

The text of the well-known song “Cat’s in The Well” is as follows:

The cat is in the well, the wolf is looking down
The cat is in the well, the wolf is looking down.
It moves its bushy tail,
which it drags all over the floor.

The cat is in the well, the kind lady sleeps
The cat is in the well, the kind lady sleeps
She hears nothing, the silence keeps
her in her deep sleep.

The cat is in the well,
suffering marks its face.
They are slaughtering the world,
and so is the bloody misfortune.

The cat is in the well,
the horse gallops as hard as it can.
The cat is in the well,
the horse gallops as hard as it can.
Sally, the one on the road, practices the American jump.

The cat is in the well
and dad is reading the news,
His hair is falling out,
all his daughters need shoes.

The cat is in the well
and the ox is in the barn.
The cat is in the well
and the ox is in the barn.
The night is so long

and the table is, Oh! So full.

The cat is in the well,
and the servant is at the door.
The drinks are prepared
and the dogs go to war.

The cat is in the well,
the leaves are starting to fall.
The cat is in the well,
the leaves are starting to fall.
Good night my love,
may the Lord have mercy on us all.
