1. German Shepherd Dog

He is the best known of the sheepdogs and is mostly in charge of caring for flocks of sheep. Its origin dates back to the year 1899 in Germany, although at the moment there is also an American line (with different physical characteristics and characters, the latter being more tame).

The German Shepherd is a very energetic, intelligent, loyal and easy to train dog thanks to his innate obedience. Equipped with great physical and mental strength, he is ideal for guiding farm animals in the fields. It is also used as a police dog, drug addict, and rescue dog.

2. Bobtail

It is a beautiful dog created in Great Britain to take care of herds of sheep and cows. Resistant to cold climates, it is a very playful and docile animal that cannot get bored because it becomes destructive. The Old English Shepherd can weigh 100 kg and measure 70 cm at the withers. It has very thick fur, is a faithful companion and needs special care of its characteristic coat. It is ideal for families with children.

3. Australian shepherd

Although it was developed in northern Spain, it later spread to Australia where it became one of the most efficient herding dogs. It increased its popularity after World War II in the western United States, where it became essential for working on farms.

The Australian Shepherd is full of energy, dynamic, always needs to move and work. It can be a great companion for a family, especially if there are children. It is of medium size and the coat can be black, red, dark blue or reddish. The bluish hue of his eyes is striking.

4. Catalan shepherd dog

Originally from the Catalan Pyrenees region, the Gos d’atura Catalá  is another of the most famous European shepherd dogs. It has a weight of about 20 kg and a height of 55 cm. He is chosen for his docility, exceptional obedience, courage and superior ability to lead herds. In addition, the Catalan Shepherd is playful, loves to be pampered and is capable of various activities in the field.

5. Border Collie

It is one of the oldest breeds of shepherd dogs in the world. He can drive any farm animal and must always be active. One of its virtues is intelligence. It is also distinguished by its tenderness, friendliness and company. It is ideal for a family who loves outdoor activities.

Its origins date back to the times of the Vikings, who brought them with them to the north of Scotland. The Border Collie can weigh up to 30 kg and measure 60 cm at the withers. It adapts to any environment or task as long as it has enough space to move around and, in addition to being an excellent sheepdog, is used as a guide dog or for the therapy of autistic children.

6. Brie Sheepdog

It is one of the oldest French breeds. It was first mentioned in 1809 and was created as a working dog, but nowadays it is a simple companion animal. The Brie Shepherd is an excellent guard, defense, rescue and guide dog. Its working capacity is extraordinary and it can drive up to 700 animals.

He is a rustic, energetic, stubborn, cheerful, intelligent and sensitive dog. He needs to receive proper education to be able to live with other dogs. As for its appearance, it has a curly and woolly coat, abundant on the muzzle. It requires continuous brushing but should not be clipped. Compared to the colors, you can find it in black, brown or gray.

7. Belgian Shepherd

Evidently, in this list dedicated to shepherd dogs, the one originally from Belgium could not be missing. The Belgian Shepherd has four varieties: Groenendael, Laekenois, Malinois and Tervueren. All of them have the ability to learn very quickly. It is a perfect animal for the care and maintenance of herds, prefers to be outdoors and needs a lot of exercise every day.
